Stronger Stewards. Stronger Union. Local 1036 Builds Power for the Future.
More than 200 CWA Local 1036 stewards and leaders from across New Jersey came together September 28–29 for our 2026 Steward Leadership Conference. Representing the NJ State Executive Branch, NJ State Judiciary, counties and municipalities across NJ and Delaware, stewards spent two days strengthening the knowledge, confidence and relationships we need to represent members and build union power in every workplace.
General sessions connected our day-to-day work with the major challenges facing public employees. A legislative panel focused on the real-life impact of skyrocketing healthcare costs and the urgent need for affordability, transparency and structural reform. Stewards heard why political action and member mobilization are essential to winning lasting solutions—and why electing pro-worker allies matters as we prepare for the 2027 legislative elections. Stewards also presented a panel discussion on mobilization and organizing best practices to learn from one another’s experiences and identify priorities for the work ahead.
Workshops offered practical training for both new and experienced stewards. Sessions covered preparation for 2027 State contract negotiations, collective bargaining trends in local government, legal rights and responsibilities, advanced discipline representation, mental health and resilience, labor history, democracy, workplace organizing and member mobilization. Across every track, the message was clear: strong contracts and strong representation begin with informed stewards who listen, communicate, organize and act together.
Thank you to every steward, presenter, guest and staff member who made the conference a success. The energy, questions and commitment throughout the program affirmed what we already know: when Local 1036 stewards are equipped, connected and united, we can solve workplace problems, protect our rights and win a stronger future for every member.
